Kris, This is a very effective metaphor to use for the job search process.

So much of gardening – like job hunting - is out of one’s immediate control. You can determine the site of the garden and the type of seed and amount of water, but other factors like pests and weather are largely out of our control, no matter how many safeguards we take.

While job seekers may not find the process of applying to jobs as relaxing or enjoyable as tending to a garden, they can find solace in many of the lessons here.

Kris,

Excellent post.

Even though, as you said, getting along with others should be a given, some people still need to be reminded that it isn't all about them and their goals.

Hi Wes - Thanks for your comments! Networking and career management should be seen as career long endeavors. Looking at them long-term can ease "networking" fears and hopefully seen as building relationships not just participating in one time events.

Hi Kris,

Networking intimidates a lot of people. Thanks for laying it out here. I especially enjoyed your point about continuing to nurture your relationships, even after finding a job. It’s important for job seekers to take a long-term view of their career management instead of putting all of their work into getting a single job. If they neglect to network with their valuable contacts, the next time they need to find a job, they’ll find themselves starting from scratch.
